What is a 12-3-1 Mentor?

We have been teaching our Mentors (Ukrainian and Russian volunteers who work with orphans and at-risk children in focused locations, orphanages, and outreaches) that the concept of becoming a trusted friend, advisor, and teacher to other is a Biblical concept. Rooted within the ministry of Jesus Christ, mentoring can be seen within his small group of disciples.

Jesus

12-3-1 Mentor

The 12

While he taught thousands at a time, he truly focused his friendships and influence on the 12 disciples. This is evident as he prepared and sent them out, giving guidance and advice for their journey (Matthew 10). It is this group of children that the 12-3-1 Mentor will visit in orphanages, special outreaches, and gatherings. They will offer the kids help during difficult times, remember their birthdays, talk about school and other important things, and in general just be a friend.

The 3

Peter, James, and John were privy to some very intimate moments with Christ, not the least of which was the Transfiguration (Matthew 17:1-3). Jesus showed this small group who he truly was, and allowed them into his confidence. He furthered that by asking they be present in the Garden of Gethsemane, to support him during his most difficult time (Matthew 26:36-46). This is a more intimate group within the 12. The 12-3-1 Mentors know their friends, and what is going on in their lives. They talk about friends, love, and the future, talking openly and honestly about these things. Scriptures are shared to help guide through tough times, and the children may be invited to their homes for tea or a meal. This small group is invited to join them at church, and the 12-3-1 Mentor’s faith in Jesus Christ is shared openly and honestly.

The One

And then there was “the one whom Jesus loved,” John. Jesus was best friends with this brother, and everyone else knew the intimacy. When Jesus told the 12 of his betrayer, Peter went first to John to ask Christ who it was (John 13:18-26). The one is a very dear friend, with the 12-3-1 Mentor truly being a part of this child’s life, guiding them socially, emotionally, and spiritually. The 12-3-1 Mentor prays for this child daily, and prays with them regularly. The child is invited into a saving relationship with Jesus Christ.
